Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess the level of awareness and knowledge about gallbladder stones among the general population in the Southern region of Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 410 adults. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling method and completed a validated online questionnaire covering demographic data, knowledge about gallbladder stones, and awareness of their complications.
Results: The majority of participants were male (66.1%) and held bachelor’s degrees (69.5%). While a sub-stantial proportion reported some knowledge of gallbladder stones (69.5%), only 25.9% had a comprehensive understanding of the condition. Overall, the median knowledge score was 17 (IQR: 11-23) out of 44. Significant knowledge gaps were identified, especially regarding the gallbladder’s function and non-surgical treatment options. Age (p-value = 0.048), and occupation (p-value < 0.001) were significantly associated with the level of knowledge, while gender, nationality, educational level, and region were not.
Conclusion: The study reveals significant gaps in knowledge and awareness regarding gallbladder stones among the population in the Southern region of Saudi Arabia. Targeted educational programs are necessary to improve public understanding of gallbladder stones, their risk factors, symptoms, and management options, which could lead to better health outcomes and reduce the burden of gallbladder diseases.

Key words: Awareness, complications, gallbladder stones, knowledge, Saudi Arabia
