Thyroid cancer knowledge, awareness, and screening among women in the Western region of Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess thyroid cancer (TC) knowledge, awareness, and screening among women in the Western region of Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the western region of Saudi Arabia from April to May 2024. An online survey was used to collect data from 469 participants to assess TC knowledge, awareness, and screening among women in this region.
Results: Of the 469 participants, only 6 (1.3%) achieved good knowledge scores about TC, 211 (45%) had moderate knowledge, and 252 (53.7%) had poor knowledge. Only 233 participants (49.7%) believed that TC was curable. However, 373 participants (79.5%) did not attend or watch awareness campaigns about TC, and 373 (79.5%) believed that screening for cancer would result in better treatment outcomes. Multiple factors influenced the participants’ knowledge levels, including age, marital status, occupation, and having friends in healthcare.
Conclusion: The majority of participants had moderate to low levels of knowledge regarding TC. This study results showed that good knowledge about TC was significantly higher among participants of younger age (1824 years), single, students, and those having friends in healthcare.
