Proton-pump inhibitors use and risk of acute kidney injury

Abstract
Acute interstitial nephritis associated with proton pump inhibitor is an immunologically mediated renal injury that is estimated to be one-quarter of the cases of acute kidney injury. Review of recent updates of the relationship between proton pump inhibitor use and development of interstitial nephritis in the period from 2008 to 2018 were included. Scientific websites were used to search for articles related to the subjects such as PubMed and Google scholar using several keywords including proton pump inhibitors, acute interstitial nephritis, adverse effects, and morbidity. 30 articles were obtained, 23 of them were included whereas the rest were excluded as their focus was different. Proton pump inhibitor-related interstitial nephritis is rare, quirky and challenging to suspect. It requires a high level of clinical prediction and knowledge. However, PPI use could be a risk factor for acute interstitial nephritis and should be administered carefully.
