Awareness of benign prostatic hyperplasia among Taif city population, Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a progressive condition in men and considered as a normal part of aging. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the current knowledge about BPH, its risk factors, symptoms, complications and also methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a pre-tested and validated questionnaire from March 2019 to June 2019 in Taif city, Saudi Arabia. A total of 500 males aged ≥40 years were included in the study. Table and figures representing frequencies and distribution were used to present the data.
Result: The current study found that the overall knowledge regarding BPH was moderate, especially in older men and/or had little information about BPH. The overall prevalence of BPH in the current study was found to be 28%. Majority of the participants urged to acquire more knowledge regarding the BPH, its risk factors and methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
Conclusion: The awareness of BPH was moderate. Awareness programs and/or campaigns should mainly focus on proper education strategies of BPH, its risk factors, prevention, and efficient treatment modalities.
