Abstract
Background: The requirement for blood transfusion is rising for many reasons, and this necessitates taking measures that ensure a continuously increasing trend of blood donation. The possession of knowledge plays a crucial role in undertaking blood donation. This makes investigating the current state of knowledge toward blood donation and implementing strategies that enhance it important. This study aims at assessing the knowledge, attitude, and motivation regarding blood donation among residents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the associated factors.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2020, targeting all adults who live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A questionnaire assessing participants’ knowledge, attitude, and motivation toward blood donation was distributed on social media platforms using a convenient sampling technique. Knowledge score and level were calculated for the participants, and then factors of interest were tested for association using an independent t-test and analysis of variance test.
Results: Among the total, 71.9% of the participants had a high level of knowledge about blood donation. The participants’ responses showed a highly positive attitude toward blood donation (88.9%) and reported that they would donate blood if it was announced that a patient needed it. There was no significant association between age, nationality, or marital state with the level of knowledge toward blood donation. At the same time, there was a significant relationship between gender, work state, education level, and financial state with blood donation knowledge.
Conclusion: The overall level of knowledge about blood donation was high, and participants showed a highly positive attitude and motivation toward blood donation.

Key words: Knowledge, attitude, motivation, blood donation, Saudi Arabia.
