Prevalence and risk factors of diabetes mellitus type-2 patients in Saudi Arabia: community based study

Abstract
Background: Type-2 (T2) is the type of diabetes mellitus (DM) which is characterized by hyperglycemia, insulin sensitivity, and insulin insufficiency. Many symptoms, complication, and comorbidities has been linked to this type of diabetes.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of T2 diabetes in Saudi Arabia and to investigate the demographic variations and risk factors for T2 diabetes patients in Saudi Arabia.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in different regions in Saudi Arabia December 2021 - January 2022. Data were collected using an online self-administered questionnaire and coded, entered, and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science version 23.
Results: Out of total 799 participants, 57.3% were males, and 82.7% were found to be diabetic patients. Concerning risk factors, 438 (54.8%) did not perform regular physical activity and 563 (70.5%) consumed fatty and high calorie foods. Two thirds (65.2%) of the participants were tobacco or shisha smokers, 45.3% were overweight or obese, 70.5% reported hypertension and dyslipidemia as comorbidities associated with T2DM. Age, gender, occupation, marital status, monthly income, region, and residence were found to be significantly associated with T2DM (p-value < 0.01). Also, physical activity, consumption of fatty and high calories foods, Tobacco/Shisha smoking, body mass index, dyslipidemia, and hypertension were also found to be significantly associated with T2DM (p-value < 0.01).
Conclusion: Prevalence of T2DM was found to be high. Age of ≥ 40 years, male gender, private occupation, low monthly income, being single, and urban residency were found to be associated with T2DM.
