Knowledge and awareness level among the Saudi population regarding sitz bath benefits in postoperative anorectal patients

Abstract
Objective:
This study aimed to assess the level of awareness and knowledge about the benefits of warm sitz baths for postoperative anorectal patients among the general population in Saudi Arabia.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study involving 1,010 participants was conducted using an online questionnaire. Data about participants’ demographics, sources of information about the water bath, reasons for abstention from water baths after anorectal surgery, and knowledge regarding sitz baths were collected.
Results:
Most participants (83.5%) were females, and 69.8% were 18- 30 years old. Of them, 54.4% were familiar with sitz baths, 27.5% received information from healthcare professionals, 83% believed in the benefits of sitz baths for postoperative anorectal care, and 14.4% used them. Age (p<0.001) and education level (p-value=0.005) were significantly associated with a better understanding of sitz baths, with older and more educated individuals demonstrating greater awareness.
Conclusion:
Despite moderate awareness of sitz baths, significant knowledge gaps persist, particularly among younger participants and those with lower educational attainment. Future efforts should focus on enhancing education through targeted programs and increasing access to professional guidance.
