The association between hypomagnesemia and type I diabetes in children at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah

Abstract
Objective:
The research extensively investigates the connection between magnesium levels and type I diabetes in children, focusing on a group of patients from King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah.
Methods:
The study involved 138 pediatric patients through an analytical cross-sectional design. This study was conducted on patients admitted to the pediatric department at the National Guard Hospital within King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah, spanning from April 2016 to October 2022. This study targeted patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus to assess their magnesium levels depending on their insulin resistance only. Therefore, patients with co-morbidities that cause magnesium levels to drop were excluded.
Results:
The study included 138 patients with type 1 diabetes (59 males and 79 females), with a mean age of 10.87±7.4. The mean serum magnesium (Mg) level was 0.78±0.33. Taking cut-off levels of serum Mg<1.7 mg/dl for the definition of hypomagnesemia [7]. Hypomagnesemia was detected in 16.67% study patients. The Association between magnesium (Mg) and other parameters, including age (r=-0.019), HbA1c (r=-0.084) and calcium (Ca) (r =- 0.026) showed a negative correlation that was very weak while phosphate (Ph) (r = 0.045) showed a positive correlation that was very weak.
Conclusion:
This research emphasized the importance of monitoring magnesium levels, although it suggested that low magnesium might not directly affect diabetes related outcomes or the effectiveness of insulin treatment for this group.
