Abstract
Background:
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disorder commonly encountered in clinical practice and is a leading cause of disability in elderly people. The aim of the present study was to determine the co-morbidities associated with both knee and hip OA and its impact on the patient's lifestyle.
Methodology:
This study is a cross-sectional study included 594 subjects with OA knee. The study subjects included both males and female patients who were aged between 10 and 88 years. The data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of four parts:(1) Socio-demographic data: Age, gender, nationality, level of education, and marital status; (2) chronic medical illnesses that may affect the sport or predispose to knee symptoms, smoking, height and weight; (3) participation in sports: experience, frequency, duration; (4) current knee pain and pain in the past 12 months, frequency, precipitating event, site, associated symptoms and management.
Results:
Five hundred and ninety-four Saudi OA patients participated in this study. Majority of the participants were female (67.8%), the majority of the participants belonged to the age groups (41-60 years) where 21.7% were from 41-50 years, 23.2% were from 51-60 years, and 27.3% were more than 60 years. The statistical analysis investigated a significant correlation between the incidence of movement difficulties due to knee joint problems and age (p=0.007), weight, BMI and BMI different categories (p<0.001) where most of those who suffered from knee joint difficulties were obese.
Conclusion:
OA is was found to be common among the elder female population. Obesity was the greatest modifiable risk factor for OA. Hypertension was found as the most common co-morbid disease which was associated with OA in the Saudi population.
