Assessing the role of MRI in predicting treatment outcomes for colorectal cancer: a systematic review of literature

Abstract
This study was conducted to provide an overview of the literature currently available on the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for predicting treatment outcomes and survival in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis standard. Medical search terms included “colorectal,” “rectal,” and “colonic neoplasms” to locate relevant papers published in PubMed/Medline between 2016 and 2024. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Radiomics Quality Score. The review included 11 publications with a total of 1,124 patients. Three of the studies included patients with CRC, and eight included patients with rectal cancer. MRI, imaging, histopathology, endoscopy, and survival served as the reference standards for the included studies. The interventions employed were resection, chemotherapy, and CRT. MRI in CRC showed potential for predicting treatment response and long-term prognosis.
