Abstract
Background: Plastic and reconstructive surgery is a distinct and little-understood surgical subspecialty. Both the general public and professionals are confused about the scope of the specialty. The purpose of this study was to measure the awareness and perception among the general population in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia regarding the discipline of plastic surgery and the non-cosmetic operations performed by plastic surgeons.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia aged 18 years and older through an online, self-administered questionnaire prepared by using Google Forms and distributed to the community via a social media application. These data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science Statistics software, version 23. A p-value of <0.05 was used to assess the statistical significance of the results.
Results: A total of 385 individuals participated in this study: 72.2% were women and 35.3% of participants were 18-25 years old. The majority of the participants (90.6%) agreed that the specialty of plastic surgery included congenital plastic surgery, and 89.9% thought that plastic surgery includes reconstructive surgery. Men and women showed statistically significantly difference in their awareness of all items in the questionnaire except congenital plastic surgery.
Conclusion: In conclusion, although the participants showed a positive attitude toward plastic surgery, there were some misconceptions regarding the scope of this surgical discipline. Therefore, we recommend launching public awareness campaigns, and using social media to disseminate educational material, communicating more frequently with general practitioners and other specialties, and including plastic surgery in the undergraduate medical curriculum to enhance public understanding of the plastic surgery field and avoid unrealistic expectations.

Key words: Reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, perceptions, knowledge
