Awareness of eastern region residents in Saudi Arabia about the hazards of maternal obesity and its association with offspring obesity and diabetes at early age

Authors: Zahraa Ahmad Alsubaie, Mohammed Yusef Al Hassan.

ABSTRACT

Background: The prevalence of maternal obesity among females around the world has become one of the most serious public health concerns. Maternal obesity is associated with an increased risk of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia. This study was conducted in order to increase the awareness of eastern region residents in Saudi Arabia about the hazards of maternal obesity and its association with offspring obesity and diabetes at an early age. Methodology: A cross-sectional, descriptive questionnaire study was carried out using an online survey during March 2020, with a sample size of 217 participants. Result: People in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia had a good knowledge about the impact of maternal obesity on the baby, and its association with early incidence of diabetes mellitus in offspring. Also, they had a good knowledge about its preventive measures. Conclusion: This article reflects that the community has some experience with maternal obesity and its risks regardless of age, educational level, or monthly income of participants, but this community still has a real need for voluntary campaigns and awareness programs about the risks of maternal obesity and ways to prevent this problem.
