Infantile Rickets in Jeddah: its causes, effects and community awareness

Manal Mosleh Mesawi Mobarki.

Abstract
Background: Rickets is a bone-deformity in which the growing bones of a child fail to develop properly due to deficient mineralization. The current study aimed to evaluate the causes, effects, level of awareness, and knowledge of vitamin D (benefits, deficiency, and sources) and its relation with rickets disease in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population in the mobile clinics and pediatrics at King Abdulaziz University Hospital and shopping centers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from September 1, 2020, to December 1, 2020. A questionnaire was used for the evaluation purpose that aimed to collect information on self-reported and direct knowledge about rickets, and vitamin D. The information collected was statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Among the participants, 37.69% were males, whereas 62.31% were females. Most guardians belonged to the age range of 21-31 years. Among the participants, 40.64% had university qualifications, 30.64% had secondary level education, while 23.06% had education till preparatory level, and 6.04% had primary level education. About 443 participants were married, and 277 were unmarried. Most of the participants reported that it is necessary to adhere to breastfeed the child because it has multiple benefits, provided the mother is keen on proper healthy nutrition (35.5%).
Conclusion: An absence of awareness in guardians was observed about rickets in Jeddah; awareness regarding the sickness, its causes, deformation, and prevention, among the general population, is required.

Key words: Infantile Rickets, Causes, Knowledge, Awareness, Jeddah
