Exploring perceptions and knowledge of assisted reproductive techniques in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the awareness and attitude towards the use of assisted reproductive technology among adults in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study was conducted in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, between March 24, 2022, and May 17, 2022. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed through social media platforms to adult residents of Al-Ahsa province.
Results:
The study revealed that most participants (79%) were aware of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Around 58% participants had proper knowledge of Islamic regulations related to ART, as confirmed by 77% participants recognizing the prohibition of some forms of ART in Islam. Over half (60%) expressed the awareness gap regarding the risks of ART for conceived children and women. Most participants (62%) had a positive attitude towards ART, and 45% believed that physicians can be pivotal in reshaping perceptions of ART. Females exhibited a higher understanding of ART than males (p = 0.024). There was no significant correlation between knowledge and other demographic characteristics.
Conclusions:
The Al-Ahsa population was generally aware of ART and had a positive attitude towards it. Awareness and attitude were significantly associated. Awareness was associated with gender, while attitude was associated with gender and education. Religion plays an important role in regulating ART. The internet and academic curricula were the main reported sources of knowledge.
