Awareness of the population about vitamin D deficiency in children in Taif, Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study 2020

Abstract
Background: Vitamin D is an important nutrient which plays a major role in the homeostasis of calcium and bone health. The aim of this study was to determine the awareness of the population about vitamin D (VD) deficiency in children in Taif, Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Taif city, Saudi Arabia. The data were collected from 11 March to 10 June, 2020 through an online questionnaire. The participants who lived in Taif city, Saudi nationals, older than18 years, and did not work in the medical field were included in the study.
Results: The mean age of the studied (n = 1317) participants was 31.02 ± 10.34 years, with 46.9% of the participants in the age group of 20-30 years, and 47.7% were single, 62.9% were employed, and most of them (80.6%) had a bachelor’s degree or higher. Most of the participants (58.5%) had a fair level of knowledge about VD deficiency in children.
Conclusion: The awareness of the population about VD deficiency in children in Taif region, Saudi Arabia, needs to be improved by campaigns that would spread awareness among the population about the importance of VD.
