Abstract
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a common medical condition which entails a stretch or sprain encountered in the ACL present inside the knee joint. This study aimed to study the level of awareness of athletes in Saudi Arabia toward ACL tear and to explore the relationship between the level of awareness and different socio-demographic factors.
Methodology: In this cross-sectional study, conducted in 2020, 480 participants were randomly enrolled, and a pre-tested questionnaire was used in data collection. The relationship between socio-demographic factors of participants and their level of awareness was calculated using the chi-square test.
Results: The athletes in Saudi Arabia had a relatively sufficient awareness toward ACL tear, where 56% of the participants were recognized with a good level of awareness. Significant differences were observed between gender, age, nationality, and level of education in relation to the level of awareness (p = 0.000). The present results showed that a good level of awareness was significantly associated with the male gender, age group of 18-25 years, Saudi nationals, and higher educational level.
Conclusion: The level of awareness toward ACL tear was relatively sufficient among athletes in Saudi Arabia. More than half of the participants had a good level of awareness. Moreover, a significant relationship was observed between gender, age, nationality, and level of education in relation to the level of awareness.

Key words: Anterior cruciate ligament, Athletes, ligament tear.
