Abstract
Background: Asthma is a major cause of morbidity among children. Uncontrolled conditions may interfere with daily activities, cause absenteeism, and increase crowds in emergency rooms.
Objective: We aimed to investigate the factors associated with repeated hospital admissions at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: This is a retrospective chart review that used a data collection sheet to obtain data from the electronic system (BestCare). The study was carried out in King Abdul-Aziz Medical City, Jeddah. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used to analyze the data.
Results: In total, 202 patients were analyzed. Of these, 64% were males, and approximately half (48.5%) were 1 to 5 years of age, 28.5% were more than 5 years old, and 23% were less than 1 year of age. Of these, 42.5% had a history of previous admission due to asthma, and 18% had been admitted three times or more. The variables that were significantly associated with repeated admission were as follows: presence of comorbidity (p value = 0.0196), education (p value = 0.0071), compliance to medications (p value < 0.0001), pediatric intensive care unit admission (p value = 0.0002). Furthermore, the use of inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and long-acting beta-agonists was significantly associated with repeated admissions.
Conclusion: A large percentage (42.5%) of the patients had a history of previous admissions. The current study revealed several factors that are associated with repeated admissions. Therefore, patient management should educate the patient and emphasize the importance of compliance with medications. Patient education should also elaborate on the factors that may increase the frequency of asthmatic attacks.

Key words: Asthma, hospitalization, readmission, pediatric, Saudi Arabia
