Abstract
Background: Anemia is one of the most common medical conditions in the world. Studies on the prevalence of adverse events associated with intravenous (IV) iron administration in Saudi Arabia are few. This study aimed to investigate the adverse events associated with IV iron sucrose, regardless of the medical conditions of the patients.
Methodology: This is a retrospective analysis of hospital records of patients who received IV iron sucrose between 2010 and 2018. Any side effects that started within 7 days of IV iron infusion were considered. We evaluated the frequencies of various adverse events, including fever, injection site reaction, and gastrointestinal disturbance.
Results: We reviewed 772 patients treated between 2010 and 2018, and all received at least one dose of IV iron sucrose infusion. Adverse events occurred in 6.3% of the patients who received treatment. No serious adverse events were recorded.
Conclusions: An adverse event incidence of 6.3% of the total sample and no reported serious adverse events indicates that IV iron sucrose was a safe choice for patients who received the treatment.

Key words: Iron deficiency anemia, iron sucrose infusion, adverse events, IV iron, IDA, side effects.
