Knowledge and perception of celiac disease among students at Fakeeh College for Medical Sciences: a cross-sectional study

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess students’ knowledge and perceptions of celiac disease at Fakeeh College for Medical Sciences.
Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted over 6 months. Undergraduate students and interns participated by completing validated face-to-face surveys administered using electronic tablets.
Results: Participants demonstrated a moderate overall knowledge score (KS) (mean = 3.75 ± 2.31 out of 8). Senior students scored significantly higher than junior students (p-value <0.001), and medical students out performed their peers in other programs (p-value = 0.005). No statistically significant difference in KSs was observed between genders (p-value = 0.308). The mean perception score was 2.77 ± 1.22, indicating a moderate level of awareness regarding the nutritional aspects associated with a gluten-free diet.
Conclusion: These findings indicated that a huge number of healthcare students showed insufficient knowledge and understanding of celiac disease. This underscores the necessity to enhance educational efforts related to celiac disease within healthcare curricula.
