Abstract
Background: Hypertensive patients have an increased risk of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Objectives: To assess the degree of awareness of adults with hypertension in the Taif region, Saudi Arabia about TIAs.
Methods: A cross-sectional study including 269 hypertensive individuals was conducted utilizing an online questionnaire. Data on patients’ demographics, hypertension condition, and awareness about TIAs were obtained.
Results: Hundred forty-seven (54.6%) patients had an age of 18–35 years, 184 (68.4%) were females, 143 (53.2%) were unmarried, 194 (72.1%) were unemployed, and 82 (67.7%) had bachelor’s education. Of them, 152 (56.5%) had the disease for <5 years and 198 (73.6%) control their blood pressure. Only 25.7% heard about TIAs, 54.3% knew it is a temporary blockage of blood flow to part of the brain, and 38.7% knew it causes temporary neurological symptoms. The most commonly reported risk factors were hypertension (72.9%), obesity (61.7%), and smoking (61.3%). The most commonly reported clinical presentation was sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg (58.4%), and 61.6% are aware that TIAs increase the risk of stroke. For prevention, 80.7% reported controlling blood pressure, and 76.2% controlled blood cholesterol. A total of 156 (58%) patients had an overall good awareness of the attacks, whereas 113 (42%) had a low knowledge level. Older patients, females, highly educated people, and those who control their blood pressure had considerably better understanding.
Conclusion: A satisfactory awareness level about TIAs was observed with safe practice intention in case of attacks. Health care providers should raise patient’s awareness about stroke clinical presentation.

Key words: awareness, assessment, TIAs, hypertension, Taif, Saudi
