Abstract
Background: Hyperbilirubinemia in neonates is defined when the level of serum total bilirubin becomes more than 5 mg/dl. Jaundice occurs when bilirubin accumulates, leading to the yellowish color of the skin and sclera. Neonate jaundice is a common problem of hyperbilirubinemia. There are several risk factors for neonatal jaundice and the severity of jaundice. The aim of the study is to highlight jaundice and the risk factors associated with jaundice severity, especially age and sex.
Methods: We searched for articles included in this review through scientific websites using several keywords. The articles were chosen based on the inclusion criteria.
Results: There were 19 articles included to write the current review; the review was written under titles in the discussion part.
Conclusion: Jaundice is a common problem of newborns; there are several factors associated with jaundice and its severity, including low gestation age and male gender. Both factors were risk factors for developing severe jaundice.

Key words: Jaundice, hyperbilirubinemia, neonates, severity
