Causes and risk factors of infertility among women of Arar city, Northern Saudi Arabia: a hospital based study

ABSTRACT

Background: Infertility is a widespread obstruction influencing individuals everywhere throughout the world and its motivation and significance may shift as per the area and financial condition. Female infertility is a developing issue in the present situation because of a few reasons. We aimed to investigate the prevalence rate, types, causes of infertility and identify some determinant factors of it among women in attending the maternity and children hospital of Arar city, Northern Saudi Arabia . Methodology: A cross sectional hospital based study was carried out during the period from 1, December 2018 to 31 March 2019, among women attending the outpatient and inpatient department in Maternity and Children Hospital, Arar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Results: The total prevalence of infertility among women attending the outpatient and inpatient department in Maternity and Children Hospital was found 65.3%; 19.8% of them were primary and 80.2% were secondary infertility. The reported causes of infertility included defect in ovulation in 139 (24.6%), followed by polycystic ovary in 123(21.8%), tubal adhesions or obstruction in 38(6.7%), endometriosis in 18(3.2) and uterine fibroid in 17(3.0%). The reported type of provided management was found drugs for induction of ovulation in 83(14.7%), herbal remedies in 44(7.8%), IVF in 28(5.0%), and husband treatment in 1(0.2%). Conclusion: Most cases attending the outpatient and/or inpatient department in Maternity and Children Hospital of Arar, KSA were due to infertility, commonest cause of infertility was found defect in ovulation in, followed by polycystic ovary.
