Abstract
Background: Ocular allergy (OA) is a spectrum of disorders that affect millions of people worldwide. Sufficient level of knowledge and awareness can improve treatment and prevention. The object of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of OA among general population in Hail, Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a self-administered questionnaire, in Hail city, Saudi Arabia, among a random sample of 681 general population from 26th June 2018 to 10th of Sep 2018.
Result: The sample age ranged from 15 to more than 40 years. Internet was the main source of information regarding OA (33.2%). About three-quarters of the participants believed that the itching was the main complaint. Some participants knew the eye structure involved in OA (24.8%), and 54.4% believed that the best way to prevent OA was to avoid the source of trigger. On the other hand, only 19.4% knew the medications used for treating OA, with a statistically significant relationship between participants' knowledge about the medications and age.
Conclusion: The level of awareness of OA was relatively moderate among Hail population in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, extra effort should be made by authorized people to increase awareness of OA and to reduce its impact on the quality of life.
