Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Mortality rates from breast cancer are the fourth highest of all cancers worldwide. The study aimed to assess awareness of the benefits of breast self-examination (BSE) among young females in Saudi Arabia and to assess the practice of breast self-examination.
Methodology: An exploratory, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted among a sample of 384 Saudi females. We used an electronic questionnaire and published it in different regions of Saudi Arabia from 29 October to 6 November 2018 via social media. The questionnaires were collected in the central region, western region, eastern region, southern region and in the northern region.
Results: A total of 384 Saudi females participated in this cross-sectional study, all of whom were aged between 18 and 35. We found that more than two thirds [70%] of the participants did not perform routine BSE. Regarding the level of education, when participants were asked if they perform routine BSE, it was found the most of the undergraduate students answered ‘no’ [71.8%]. Most of the respondents who were single also answered ‘no’ [72.5%].
Conclusion: The study shows a lack of proper knowledge and life experience among participants. The result of this research indicates that in our country the application of BSE in relation to its awareness is good.
