Abstract
The term thrombosis refers to the formation, from constituents of blood, of an abnormal mass within the vascular system of a living animal. When this process occurs within the deep veins, it is referred to as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The principle predisposing factors for DVT development include damage to the vein wall, a hypercoagulable state, and slow blood flow. It is among the main causes of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients worldwide and, at the same time, can be easily avoided. In this review, we looked into the risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of DVT in bedridden and prolonged recumbent patients. The review is a comprehensive research of PUBMED since the year 2000 to 2018. Bedridden and prolonged recumbent patients and patients admitted to the hospital for a long period of time are also at higher risk of thrombosis. The American Society of Hematology (ASH) in 2018 recommended prophylaxis in patients admitted to hospital settings. Patients who do not get prophylaxis like unfractionated heparin (UFH), low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), or mechanical prophylaxis are at high risk of developing thrombosis. Therefore, care is necessary when managing prolonged recumbent patients, and patients admitted to the hospital, and daily reassessment of the risk of thrombosis is recommended in these settings.

Key words: deep vein thrombosis (DVT), bedridden, prolonged recumbent, admitted to the hospital, higher risk
