Orthopedic surgeons' way to inform their patients before knee arthroplasty surgery: a cross sectional study

ABSTRACT

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a procedure performed to treat several conditions, including knee osteoarthritis. It results in a good outcome in general; however, the dissatisfaction of patients about the operation results interferes with such success of the operation. Patients should be aware of the complications and outcome of this operation. This study aimed to assess the way surgeons inform their patients about knew arthroplasty surgery. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted on knee surgeons using an online survey. Statistical package for social sciences program version 21 was used to analyze the data. Results: The study included 50 Knee surgeons; the primary rate of TKA per year was reported to be 24% making them more than 100 per year. There were 22% surgeons who reported no revision of TKA per year. There were only 20% and 16% of surgeons who provided information, written and orally, respectively. Conclusion: Low awareness and care of surgeons were reported regarding provision of preoperative information to patients.
