Abstract
Background: Knowledge and education of mothers about puberty health is a critical factor for the teenager’s future health promotion. Proper instruction can help teenagers in handling puberty changes without stress. The aim of the current study was to evaluate mother’s knowledge and awareness as regard their daughter’s puberty health.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,000 mothers. Women in the study were selected by the random sampling method. A research-based questionnaire was used to evaluate participant’s awareness. The reliability of the survey was calculated using Cronbach alpha (0.844).
Results: The mean score of mother’s awareness as regards physical puberty was 84.9 ± 14.6, while their knowledge toward nutrition in adolescence was 70.7 ± 10.4, regarding social puberty was 77.2 ± 12.2, and regarding psychological puberty was 79.8 ± 17.4. There was a significant relationship between mother’s education and overall mother’s knowledge scores (p = 0.01, r = 0.3). However, there was a non-statistically considerable relationship between mother’s knowledge and mother’s age (p = 0. 1, r = 0.07).
Conclusion: There is a good level of awareness of mothers toward girl’s puberty health. Education is an important factor, so it is recommended to arrange regular educational programs for mothers to maintain and improve their awareness toward different aspects of girl’s puberty health. Communications skills between mothers and daughters are a strong factor to guide teenagers properly.
