A cross-sectional exploratory study of knowledge, attitudes, & practices of health care providers in the assessment of child maltreatment

Matar Mohammed Alharbi.

Abstract
Background: Child maltreatment (CM) carries a massive social cost and is a severe human right and health issue. This study was done to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding CM among health care providers.
Methodology:
This exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 physicians and nurses working in ECS at General Hospital. A pilot-tested verbal interview questionnaire was administered and interviews were completed between October–November 2018.
Results:
Of 200 health care providers, 70% reported receiving no CM education or training. Only 61.8% knew physical violence as the primary form of child maltreatment. Sexual abuse as a primary form of CM was mentioned by 8%. While 22.5% of health care providers strongly agreed or agreed that they held an important role in preventing CM, 25% also strongly disagreed or disagreed that they felt confident in diagnosing and treating CM cases. And, 15.5% strongly disagreed that they knew where to refer victims for further monitoring.
Conclusion:
This study indicates knowledge gaps in emergency health care providers’ knowledge of the primary forms of CM. Given that health care workers believed that they play an essential role in identifying and treating CM, future research should focus on improving physician’s knowledge of CM, developing education and training materials grounded in cultural contexts to increase response capacity.

Key words: Child maltreatment, Health care providers, Human rights abuses
