Abstract
Background: Sleep disturbance is a significant health issue in people with chronic diseases. Hypertension and type 2 diabetes are both chronic illness with very high and rising prevalence. In recent years a wealth of evidence has accumulated, which now supports a link between these diseases and the quality of sleep. This study aims to evaluate the sleep quality in Saudi patients with diabetes and hypertension.
Methodology: sleep quality was evaluated by analysis of the results of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. This study was carried on 500 Saudi patients with diabetes and hypertension.
Results: This study detected poor sleep quality (PSQ) in 240 with significant positive correlation with age, weight, duration of illness. Also, female patients suffered PSQ more than male patients. In addition to that, PSQ was common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus than type 1.
Conclusion: According to these results; there is a proportional relationship between PSQ and chronic diseases as diabetes and hypertension. So, these patients should be monitored for any sleep disturbances in order to early detection and treatment.

Key words: sleep disturbances, sleep quality, diabetes, hypertension, The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index
