Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the serious public health problems and its prevelance is increasing globally. The long-term DM and uncontrolled DM result in several complications, including diabetic foot (DF). DF involves the destruction of foot tissue which may lead to amputation; however, proper foot care can prevent the occurrence of DF, as well as its complications. The aim of the current study was to assess the knowledge of diabetic patients about foot care.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in during the period from December 2017 to March 2018 on diabetic patients of both types (type 1 and type 2) of DM at King Salman Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study was performed using a survey to investigate both demographics and knowledge of patients.
Results: The prevalence of high knowledge was 53.3%, while low knowledge represented 46.7% among participants. Several factors significantly influenced the level of knowledge, including gender (p<0.001), education level (p=0.001), DM type (p=0.002), and suffering diabetic retinopathy (p=0.009).
Conclusion: High knowledge was prevalent among moderate percent of diabetic patients, which is promising and better than previous results in Saudi Arabia.

Key words: Diabetic foot, foot care, Saudi Arabia, diabetes mellitus, foot care knowledge
