Abstract
Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a major public health issue that causes chronic disability. Discogenic LBP is the most common cause of chronic LBP. A herniation may develop suddenly or gradually over weeks or months. This study was aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness of lumbar disc prolapse (LDP) among patients who visited the outpatient clinic of neurosurgery in King Fahad Hospital (KFH), Al Madinah Al Munawarah, Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in KFH, Al Madinah Al Munawarah, Saudi Arabia, during a period from June to August 2019. A structured questionnaire related to knowledge about LDP was used for data collection based on the previous studies. The data were categorized, coded, and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program version 22.
Results: The study included 150 participants aged between 18 and 70 years. The majority of respondents were females (53.3%) and Saudi nationals (90.7%). About 42% were highly educated patients. Regarding the knowledge of participants about the risk factors, we found that most of the participants had a good knowledge of all the risk factors except for smoking and family history.
Conclusion: The current study showed that the awareness of LDP among the studied population was good for all domains except for smoking and family history as risk factors.

Key words: Awareness, disc herniation, disc prolapse, knowledge, prevention
